This shelter is the cat's meow

I spent the morning at our local Animal Shelter. Lanark Animal Shelter is in Smiths Falls, Ontario and is a non-profit, no-kill shelter. No-kill meaning the animals are kept as long as necessary to find a proper, loving home for them. Some of the cats do go out on foster but not often. There is an area of the shelter called the 'cat room' (oh, how I love this room) where the cats can roam and play and enjoy the couches and window-sills. I have supported this shelter for 20 years and this is a far cry from the days when the cats were in cages 24/7. These are the most relaxed, happy little homeless cats I have ever seen.

This is a great way to watch and get to know a cat that you may be interested in adopting.

My friend, Shelly had a stray cat to bring to LAWS this morning so I tagged along.

They loved having company and were all over us.
Some were a little stand-offish

This is Marnie

The little stray had been hanging around Shelly's neighbourhood for a week and was grabbing food from bowls meant for out-door cats who live on that street. It was hungry when it first appeared so she presumed it had been dumped there. Shelly, being a small cat-rescuer herself,  was unable to adopt it as she has many at her home that still need to find good homes. So, off it went to LAWS. It is now safe at the shelter and will be put up for adoption.

We had a great time visiting with all the resident cats. There were around 30 in the cat-room today.

and got a  kiss good-bye from Memphis.

Such a handsome face, this true lovebug of a cat just wants hugs and all your attention. He's long and lean and ready to be your cuddle machine!

So if you are in the area, please take a drive over to the Lanark Animal Shelter in Smiths Falls to meet some of their gorgeous cats. Here's their websitehttp://www.lanarkanimals.ca/cats1.asp?page=2

  4. Deb, how I love the look of this no-kill shelter. Before moving to Greece I volunteered in a no-kill cat shelter in Denmark for some years (it's so painful in those shelters where they sit in a cage 24/7). It gave me a lot of mental toughness - realizing you can't bring them all home! It's a different story here in Greece - there simply are no other place for them to go (at least if they are to have a chance of surviving), so I do what I can to save the little lives. They ALL deserve a good quality of life.

  5. Nonprofits do valuable work in the communities they serve to create a better quality of life and safe neighbourhoods. The great part of being in a community in Ontario is that we are all helping each other reach this goal. There are many helpful programs in place to help nonprofits deliver quality services to Ontarians, such as the Community Use of Schools program and the Ontario Poverty Reduction Strategy.
