Sometimes a photograph can grab you and transport you back to a familiar place. Perhaps a place that was so full of love that you knew, even as a child, that you would someday have vivid memories of that time.
Tasha Tudor
My grandmother 'taught me' to drink tea at an early age, perhaps seven. She was not as fancy as Tasha Tudor with her lace ruffles and all, but she always wore a dress and an apron. Her name was Mary.
I can still feel the tea-cup in my hand, warmed from the wood-stove and filled with 1/2 tea and 1/2 milk and a bit of honey. She taught me how to pour tea, to let it steep for 5 minutes and never clean the pot with soap.
"Just hot water and some lemon will do the trick", she'd say.

Along with the tea was fresh bread, toasted on the wood stove, with her home-made strawberry jam. She always kept the cookie jar filled with home-made cookies. As I type this I can see her face and feel the heat of the stove on my face. I remember her little brown tabby-cat, Maggie always snuggled in her apron. I can hear the laughter of my cousins, who sat around the summer kitchen making these same memories. We shared stories and listened to music on the old record player. We teased each other and made plans for the next morning; what we'd do and where we'd go.
Everyday was an adventure at my grandmother's home.
Such wonderful memories of childhood. Summers at the old farm.
My new tea-pot is the prettiest one I own.
It pours perfectly.
When I saw it I thought of my grandmother.
We are going to get along just fine.
Freezing rain is on it's way.
Audrey is watching for it.
She'll let us know when it's here by batting at the window.
Thank goodness her days of climbing the blinds are over.
Hugs, Deb

Hi Deb! Oh, what a sweet post and a sweet tribute to your grandmother! You have a very pretty new tea pot too! Little Audrey is adorable!

We wish we could send you some sunshines, but we're not having any either in Wellington, NZ. Grey clouds and wind and a southerly is due to blow in from Antartica.
ReplyDeleteWe loved yesterdays posts with all the sunny smiling cat faces, and two snuggling together in the cat bed. Sometimes I worry about Poppy being a bit lonely, but she seems to do ok.
Deb, you asked if she was plush and she is a bit like a little teddy bear. She is a good girl too, quite quiet. She gets up for breakfast, does a little wander round for an hour or so, then usually puts herself to bed at 7pm and sleeps til 7am, gets up for breakfast, then back to bed all day while I go to work.

Love your recollections of tea with Miss Mary. She sounds like the kind of grandmother I aspire to be! Your new teapot is an absolute beauty... and the perfect pour is more important to me than the looks... you found both! blessings ~ Tanna
ReplyDeleteWonderful memories! Your new teapot is lovely and I think having tea is very soothing and we all need that in this day and age. Wishing you and the kitties a nice memory making day. Hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteOMG! Sweet post.
ReplyDeleteI love tea and wish I could find a large teapot that pours more than three cups. But if they become too big, they look more like vats, with spouts. Ah well. As with most things, it's what's produced rather than what produces it that matters.
ReplyDeleteDeb, your grandmother sounds a lot like mine! Mine always had her cookie jars filled too. Love your new teapot! What a gorgeous pot to pour your tea from. Thank you so much for joining me for tea and I wish you a delightful rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Sandi
Oh, Deb, this was so lovely! It brought tears to my eyes. How blessed you were to have such a grandmother and to have such wonderful memories! I hope one day to be such a blessing to my grandchildren! Your teacups and new teapot are quite lovely! Thank you for sharing with A Return to Loveliness,
ReplyDeleteGod Bless,
Kathy
Thank you for linking up- I really enjoyed reading this posting and hearing you talk about your grandmother. |I just recently got to go help with my 2 grandchildren in Missouri. My grandaughter was calling me Nanny (instead of Nanna) by the end of the week and I like that.
ReplyDeleteTea out of a pretty tea pot and sipped out of a pretty cup ~ it just tastes better doesn't it? Lovely!
