Once is enough

During kitchen clean-up last night, I noticed Audrey looked bored so I rolled her mouse in a tiny bit of fresh, organic cat-nip and tossed it to her.
She had never experienced cat-nip.

She tasted it, rolled her head on it and seemed to enjoy it.
and then it changed.
"EARTH to AUDREY"

Her eyes dialated and she became a little nasty. Ears went back and she growled at the other cats nearby.  Luckily, the effects of the cat-nip lasts only minutes.
She would never normally have 'airplane ears' when Sierra is near. She loves her. I took the mouse away and she lay down.
"What the he** was that?"
 "Better sleep it off, Audrey."
You're in the B category...Best Not Given.
She was back to her normal antics within minutes.

Cat-nip is not for every cat. Some will experience a 'high' to the extent that they will become very kittenish and want to play non-stop. Some, like Audrey. will feel odd and become aggressive. It is best that these cats do not play with cat-nip toys. The only way to know whether your cat is fine with it  is to give just a tiny amount under supervision.

Someone has requested the Pumpkin Muffin recipe. Here it is...

You need:
1 cup of butter
2 1/2 cups of white sugar
3 large brown eggs
mix this together
   in a separate bowl....
3 cups of flour
1 tsp. each of the following...
baking powder
baking soda
salt
cinnamon
cloves
1/2 tsp of nutmeg
add to butter mixture
add 2 cups of pure pumpkin
add 1 tsp of vanilla
add raisons or nuts if you like
This will make 2 loaves or 32 muffins
bake at 350 for 1 hour or for muffins 25 minutes

For my American friends...You are in my thoughts and prayers as you elect your next President. May the best man win.

hugs, Deb

  1. Hi Deb, Hope to see you for tea later today. I love reading your wisdom and experiences with your four-legged friends!

  3. I love the photos recording Audrey's catnip experience--cats are so different in their reactions to it. Our tribe offers symptoms of 'silly'--'soggy' to downright pugilistic.

  4. Oh dear...poor Audrey must feel a bit Jekyll and Hyde!

  5. The nip certainly brought out the lion in Audrey, didn't it. Maybe one of those trac balls might amuse her.

  6. Hi Deb!

Wowww... I never knew that about cat-nip.
Some time ago my cat Bonny was acting agressive after she was given a toy with some the stuff.
She lost interest in it after a few times.
Lucky for her and her sister I guess.
I was wondering of course what on earth had caused her strange behaviour.
I guess now I know thanks to you.
No cap-nip enters this house anymore!

I too will try out your muffin recepy for I was given some fresh of the land pumkins by my father in law.

    Greets and a lovely week,

    Gabi

    1. Wait.. I have one, no two questions about the recipe.

tsp... is that a teaspoon or a tablespoon?
I, m only used to Dutch recipe books I'm afraid.

The 350 refers to Fahrenheit I guess?
It’s all Celsius here… but I can look that up somewhere.

    2. tsp is teaspoon
      tbsp is tablespoon

Not sure what you would set your stove at. Hope you enjoy these.

  7. I had a few cats that did not like catnip and experienced bad with it and then we had george who turned into the most hilarious character, kind of like the crazy uncle we all have when he gets too much to drink, george drooled and staggered, just like he was drunk, then we had one that became so amorous it was so funny.

what a beautiful couple!! Love the costumes!
I will try your recipe, we love pumpkin muffins!!!!

  8. Aww, poor Audrey! So funny. One of my cats kind of goes crazy, too, so I keep the catnip at a minimum!

    Those muffins look yummy!

  9. Poor Audrey! Too sensitive for catnip! I'll have to check Mr Toes when I get home. Charlie gets playful with it but not a real interest for him. hugs, Linda

  10. Our Harley doesn't get affected at all it does nothing to her it's like she is immune to it she has been like this since she was a kitten so we don't bother with it . She doesn't need it she gets nuts all on her own and acts like she is higher then a kite runs a muck of the house every night with a big puffy tail lol . Lovely looking couple . Nice photos . Have a good day !

  11. Thank you for the recipe! I am going to try them soon.
My Sadie loves catnip. I have some growing in the garden and sometimes I bring her a few leaves. She rolls and rolls and rolls over them. I never knew that some cats can become aggressive.
Hope you are having a great day!

  12. Our Salem gets a bit crazed too...but the rest of the crew goes all silly! We let Salem indulge alone so her posessiveness won't get out of hand.

    1. As far as I know, she's a domestic short-hair mix of things. Her mother is a pastel torti and her father is unknown. I brought her mom and the three kittens home from our local animal shelter a year ago. I adopted out 2 kittens and the mother, Annie and Audrey stayed with me. Audrey has the look of a Russian Blue but she is certainly not a pure-bred cat.

  19. The first few times Truffle was given catnip, she became a little aggressive with Brulee. It didn't last too long, thankfully. Brulee just licks it.

  21. I banished catnip from the house after my tom tried to hump everything in sight and the best natured female cat in the world turned into a beeeeitch! I told them that if they could not handle their intoxicants they would have to stay on the wagon! ~ Maureen
