A little help from Zoie

Finally, the dining-room is put back in order.
I'm happy with the darker varnished window-sills and door frames.
It's amazing how repairing a broken window pane can result in a weeks worth of improvements.
This little old house of ours (120 years old) has lots of wood to care for. It's a small house that has always required a lot of work.
"Oh, hi (alien) Audrey."

On to cat-sitting...

Yes, that is snow beside my foot. I refuse to wear winter boots anymore *shakes her fist to the sky*  but the snow is still here.

The object above my feet is a cat toy. Yesterday, Zoie and I played awhile with it before I fed her dinner and hugged her good-bye 'for now'.
This morning I arrived to find the same toy sitting at the front door where I enter.
This was for me; a gift of sorts.

Years ago, my Cali would leave items at the front door when the family left for the day. On return, we would find toys of all sorts piled up just inside where we would enter. No other place.
I asked my vet, Dr. Anne about this as I found it to be quite odd and had never experienced a cat doing that before.
Her explanation was that the cat would see you leave, find something in the house that had your scent on it and leave it at the exact spot where the cat last saw you.
This gesture was to help YOU find your way back home.

So, with that in mind, I was quite complimented this morning when I found something with my scent on it from yesterdays' play-time waiting right where Zoie last saw me.
Sweet? I think so.
She also watches out the window for the lady with thumbs.
I know when I'm needed. ;-)
She has the cutest little 'pucker-up' mouth I have ever seen on a cat.

And now for a weather report...

This was our other property yesterday morning covered in a blanket of snow.
The ground is still too wet for any digging.
I'm hoping for lots of sunshine in the coming weeks.

hugs, Deb

  2. What a sweetheart Zoie is and so pretty. I love a kitty in a window. You have the best job on the world! Audrey is a cutie too.

Your window and dining room are wonderful. I love the wood. I can't believe all that snow. Today here it's supposed to get in the 80s. I think the snow is pretty but I guess we want what we don't have.

  3. The lady with the thumbs. Yes, we share a name! They're beautiful -- but I don't think Lizzie likes me as much as Zoie likes you! No toys by the door. (However, the sound of the garage door going up at five sends her running to the back door!)

  4. I told a friend yesterday that I'm not washing my winter coat until the temperature is 90 degrees outside. This is the strangest weather!

My grandparents' home had varnished wood windows and doors. We loved that old house and they are a lot of work!

  5. Zoie is a cutie!

I've never heard of cats doing that... maybe my family's cats just didn't.

  7. My house is small and quite architecturally characterless.
I'd give up ease of care for some character.
Zoie has the sweetest little face. Full of love, just like her.

  8. It's so funny that you wrote about cats putting toys by the door. The post I'm about to write is about the same thing but with an entirely different reason. I do love the idea that they put something there to help you find your way back to them!

  9. Zoie is gorgeous. When CC gets home May 2 we shall go to the shelter and get a kitten. I miss Clovis terribly even though Shelley is a new love.

  11. The story of Cali and Zoie each leaving toys at the spot they last saw “their people” is so touching! I love to think of them actually doing an action in wanting to help you find your way back to them. What Sweethearts. It is sweet that they even looked alike, too. And I do love Zoie’s little pucker-up mouth... she must have many kisses in there!

  13. I just found your blog from "It's all Connected". I love it here! and, i love the story about the toys, i most certainly did not know thatabout the toys. We are catless right now, and it feels strange to be in a house without a cat. I love the photos on your sidebar too, especally the smiling collie, your granddaughter, and the little kitten pushing the drawer... all sooooo precious!
