Grieving Cats

Grieving Cats
Christine left behind 4 loving cats who continue to live with her partner. Their names are Polly, Oliver, Jimmy & Zoe. Christine was a cat-lover & then some so she is missed by her feline companions. Cats do grieve and feel the loss of a loved one. There can be signs of grieving that should be noticed by the remaining owners. The cat may sleep more and when awake be much more vocal than normal. It may not eat or drink which can be a serious problem and must be attended to within 2 days. Litter box accidents can be frequent. The cat may roam the house calling for the missing person. In all of these cases, more attention must be paid to the pet and keeping the cat busy by playing with it and carrying it around will help. It usually just takes time for the cats to accept the loss of their person and as long as they stay in their own home, their lives should return to as close to normal as possible. Don't let anyone tell you that cats do not grieve.....they do.

  2. I am sure you are right and I am sure they grieve for other cats as well as humans. When Dollycat went to the bridge, Jasper moped and pined for quite a while for her. Hugs GJ x

  3. I know they grieve! When my Dad went to a nursing home the cat and dog where very upset. They clung to my Mom even more! They have also been her salvation when my Dad passed and now they are her 'boys' as she calls them.

  4. I have seen cats grieve and their sorrow is deep and real...I know how much you miss Christine; yes, the "firsts" are very difficult to endure when a loved one has passed on...Grief does strange things to time as well=it can feel like yesterday and like years ago since you've seen them, all at the same time...Hugs to you, Deb.

  5. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving in Canada sweet friend and know my heart breaks for you as you think of your dearest friend in each occasion that arises that you and she would have shared. Memories become more precious each day. I completely agree about the kitties grieving. When our Tasha, the mini American Eskimo that was our calico Rosie's best buddy passed this last Mother's Day, she was depressed-like for 2 months and would yowl for no apparent reason. I truly believe she was grieving for her!! That music box is precious and I love that print that is enlaid on it.Prayers and Hugs to you Deb!!

  6. That's for darned sure. Gypsy was always a huggy love, but when Stimpy died five years ago, he became a shadow. What I didn't realize for a long while was that he was overgrooming and licked his tummy bare, like peach fuzz. It has since grown back after several years and he seems fine now. But it was definitely grief.

Someone above mentioned homeopathic remedies. I've been impressed with the flower essences for animals from Green Hope Farm -- they have one for grief and abandonment. I have to say their "Anxiety" is a wonder essence. Gypsy, who hates car rides to the lake and let's us know about it the whole way has been as quiet and docile as anything after a drop of it on his ear and a bit of spray in his carrier. Go figure -- I don't get it, but I don't argue, either!

I am so very sorry for the loss of your friend. For us humans the loss of a friend is different, sometimes than even family, for we have chosen each other. I wish you peace and healing.
