The cold makes for busyness.

The mouse-house kitchen corner has become a suet-making factory. I made enough for two weeks and a bit left over for the freezer. They will LOVE this. Last year when I put this out they snubbed the commercial cakes and devoured the home-made ones. I think I made a lot of friends at the feeders with these little cakes of deliciousness.

You can get very creative making these cakes. I had some stale nuts in my baking cupboard so I threw them in. A small amt. of flax seed was taking up space in the cupboard so that went in, too.

                                                       Chickadee-dee-dee-dee-dee

I bet I'll have pretty feathers scattered about at the feeders for all my hard work.....ok, maybe not.
But...I know they are happy little birds.

Annie is busy, too, grooming her toes.

Audrey just noticed the camera.

And all this bird feeding has made me hungry.

A hot cup of tea and a blueberry muffin sounds about right.

If you would like to make the suet cakes
the recipe is on the previous post.
Be prepared for an invasion. :)

  1. Looks good enough to eat! I usually save my bacon drippings and pour them in week after week into a container in the freezer. If I have a piece of stale bread, or seeds at the bottom of a bagel bag, that gets thrown in too. It's kind of a constantly evolving suet.
    Yours looks better!

  2. Our birds here love that homemade suet, too! I've added it to my To Do list!

  3. The birds are no bird-brains: they know home-made is better than store-bought. They can probably smell the chemicals in the commercial food. Just the aroma of home-baking alone tells us humans how good it is.

    Lovely Sierra...

  4. I love our sweet Sierra photos. Waiting.

I've never made the suet cakes. I need to find a lard supplier here! It can't be that hard. They look great and my birds are packing it in (especially on snowy days!) Good idea about incorporating stale nuts, flax, etc!

  11. Those home made cakes must be like heaven for your birds. The store bought one have to be full of all sorts of chemicals to keep the fats from going rancid.

  12. What a sweet and kind thing you do for the birds! Love all your pictures of them. Do they all come at the same times each day or is it more of a come and go all day type thing?

  13. Early mornings are very busy and then again around noon. Then they all disappear for awhile. At 3 the mourning doves show up. It's like they has synchronized watches.

  15. Oh, Deb, I have been away too long and have missed your last two posts. I want to say how sorry I am at the loss of your beloved Sierra! So difficult, especially so soon after losing Kane. So amazing that she was brought back to you after disappearing, too. So glad that she had her final days with those who loved her.
I want to wish you a Happy New Year, but I know you must not be feeling too happy. You are always kind to those voiceless companions that make our lives so beautiful. Thank you for the recipe for the birdie cakes. Sending you hugs xo Karen

  16. Gosh, I think my birds may be heading your way Deb - I bet they can smell the goodness on the breeze! I have to admit I buy my suet cakes - today the woodpeckers, bluebirds, nuthatches, chickadees. . . . . . assisted of course by the squirrels, devoured two whole cakes, plus emptied all the feeders again!
Funny as it's not even that cold here.

I do love your 'rather posh' suet feeders BTW!
    Hugs - Mary

We are taking a drive to the cottage...with a bunch of donations for the thrift shop...
Perhaps a few treasures will come home with me....
    Happy Friday!
    Cheers!
    Linda :o)

  18. I just started putting suet out again when the cold weather hit - the bluejays haven't attacked it yet so all is well. The little chickadees are super happy with all their seeds and suet - I have swarms of chickadees now which is bizarre because early on I had zero!
