Must rant...sorry.

Very early this morning I ran into a lady who at one time worked at our local pet store and we started to talk 'kittens'. I mentioned that I was looking for a specific tunnel for them to play in and she then mentioned that she had a bunch of kittens at her home, too. I asked her if she was fostering for a shelter. What came out of her mouth next almost floored me.
She said, "Oh no, they are my cats' kittens. I have always let my own cats have one litter each so that they can experience 'mother-hood'.
Okay...now this is supposed to be a woman who is very enlightened to what is happening in shelters today with the over-population of cats and dogs and the death of millions each year in our country. She works in the pet-business, for heaven's sake. I took a deep breath and said."Have you been to our shelter lately? If not, you need to go there and see how many cats and kittens are living in over-crowded conditions waiting months for a home and that's if they are lucky. I could never let my cat have kittens for the lame reason you just gave. I think that's terrible." *dead silence*    Did I really say that? Yep.

I went to the cash and she followed me and began chatting with the lady on cash. I couldn't even look at her nor speak another word. Nor did she. Her face was red. I left and wanted to scream. I'm still angry as I type this. "Grow up...lady"

Boy, did I need another cup of coffee. Hugs, Deb

  1. What an awful thing to say - what a completely stupid woman!! Her comments beggar belief x

  2. Good for you friend. What you did was right. She needs to be made aware of life as it is. I'd probably call the store where she works too. If she's in the busines, they need to educate their employees.

  3. That woman's attitude is appalling, but sadly all too common even in this day and age. Good for you for saying what you did, I think I'd have pointed out that tens of millions of cats and dogs are euthanized every year because of stupid [insert bad words] people like her. OMC, my blood pressure would have been through the roof!

  4. The woman was a fool and you were totally right (and brave) to say something!!! Well done :-)

  5. I've heard this same excuse more times than I care to count.....sadly some people just do NOT 'get it'.
Work at the shelters for a few days, and see how that 'motherhood experience' soon turns to chaos,
people like her haven't a clue.

Love your kitty pictures, so sweet.

  6. This woman should be required to learn the joys of euthanizing...maybe killing a few pets will teach her a lesson.
Deb, you said the right thing. I hope it "takes"!

  7. Good for you for saying it. I just hate that and there are many that still believe that you dont spay untill they have one litter. No wonder you wanted to scream. Hugs GJ xx

  8. I remember years ago a friend of mine did the same thing so her son could experience the birth. Then she put an ad in the paper for free kittens and she got a call from someone warning her that there were people that took free kittens and didn't do very kind things to them (won't even go into that now). Then she was upset because most of the kittens were gone by then.

I read one time where someone said if you want your children to experience birth then take them to a shelter so they can experience death when the shelter becomes overcrowded.

Like you, I'm mad at the kind of ignorance that lady showed. However, you might have given her something to think about now and hopefully there won't be a next time.

  9. Oh Deb! I'm so proud of you! Someone has to speak up! I am usually a quiet ,reserved late- middle aged lady but I would have done and said the same thing.
And have done so on many occasions! What is wrong with these people: experience motherhood? Are they daft? I wish these @£$€¥'s could spend even just one hour with the euthanasia tech at the local pound. Maybe that would curtail their idiotic practices! I am going out to dinner tonight and will raise my glass in your honour.

  11. I certainly don't blame you for saying the truth!
And I must admit that sweet picture of the kitten cleaning off the slapper made me laugh out loud!
You are witty and kind and love cats....you are a friend of mine!

  12. I'm so glad you had the nerve to say that to that ignorant woman. Unfortunately, too many people think just that, but perhaps because of you, she won't let her cats have more litters. Yes, kittens snd cute and fun, and I would love to have a litter around, but I can't do it with so many unwanted animals around. Good for you!

  13. Well done you! There are many idiots around. They should all be put in a shelter and left there.

  15. I am so proud of you for speaking up! YOU GO GIRL!!!!

It kills me that in this day and age, people still believe that "joys of motherhood" crap. So many unwanted cats, and you want to bring more into the world for your own selfish pleasure? Argh.

  16. HI! I have followed your blog for a few weeks but this is the first time I have commented.
You were totally right, in my opinion. I have heard people say the same thing!
One time when I was in my teens I took in a really young stray female kitten and raised her. Then before I knew it, she had had a litter of her own under my bed. I took responsibility and found good homes for each of those babies, and then the mother got fixed right away; and ever since then I have gotten my females spayed as early as possible. There is no good excuse for purposefully letting cats procreate like that; just to "experience motherhood".... I have similar opinions about people who breed their horses; because the horse neglect/slaughter situation in this country is really bad also.
Thanks for posting; I love your blog. :)

  17. That is one of the most irresponsible comments I have heard made in a long time. Good for you to tell her what is what! I hope she 'listens' but most don't!

  18. Hope you gave her something to think about.....if she had enough brain cells to think at all!

  20. Wow.. I totally admire that you were able to do that..

Not sure what I would have said... I would have THOUGHT everything you said, along with the fact that having even one heat cycle increases the risk of mammary cancer in cats..

Experience motherhood my patootie.. Most cats that I've fostered suffer through motherhood..

  21. I can't believe there are still Neanderthals out there with this attitude. What a stupid cow! BRAVO for you to say something to her! You are my HERO! I’m certain I wouldn’t have been so tactful. Judging by the number of comments on this thread I’m guessing they all agree. We should find out where she lives & turn her in to animal services. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Cow!
