Keeping Annie happy & 9 little babes

Last Christmas I added one string of  little white lights to the step-back cupboard.

It looked very pretty at night.
"Did you like them, Annie?"

"As I recall, you were quite mesmerized."
She's never far from all the hoopla and she wants more lights in there this year so we are working on that.

And now may I introduce the little kittens...
If you look close enough there are two at the bottom and a pile of seven on top.
Bless their teeny-weeny tiny hearts.

Little trees and lambs

Although lambs are often a symbol of Spring they
always make me think of Christmas.

The little trees are displayed in my small french country cupboard
along with this sweet print that I bought in the general store in Pakenham.

One of my woodland creatures peeking through the window.

So, it's beginning to look a little like Christmas around here.
I'll be adding this little guy from my Easter stash to the cupboard. He has an expression that says to me
"Oh, do carry on with the decorating."
"Well, ok."  So I added two more.

I just love lambs but it's probably best that I stick to rescuing cats.

Thank you all so much for your supportive comments and donations to help little Molly and her brood of nine. If you would like to help her cause please donate to this rescue. http://www.catrescuenetwork.org/
She is in one of their wonderful foster homes. Every little bit helps. I'll keep you updated on them as I hear from the rescue. So far, all is going well and there is an email in my previous post from the president of The Ottawa Cat Rescue Network keeping us up to date on mom and her nine babes. Thank you.

This week I'll be posting a list of things to look for in hiring a reliable cat-sitter for your precious cats while you travel.

And in closing, I spent some time Christmas shopping with 'my girls.

Looks like we tuckered out little Gwyn so home we went for nap-time.

Thank you from Louise Hindel

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful donations to the Ottawa Cat Rescue Network.
You have been incredibly generous and I can't stress enough how much they appreciate your help. Your donations, prayers and good wishes for Molly and her nine kittens gives them such comfort.
Dear Kari - I read your comment and was told that there is no problem with them cashing a U.S. money order. Thank you so much.

I have an email that arrived today with a thorough update on how they are doing.
The president of the Ottawa Cat Rescue Network, Louise Hindel,  writes...

Thank you so much, Debby. I went into my internet and saw all these donations and thought "what is going on?" I thought Santa-Claws had come early. I will send individual thank you's but send you the updates.  The vet costs and KMR are going to be astronomical for this mother and litter; $2500 if all goes well. If Molly gets mastitis or hypocalcaemia; or a kitten gets sick, well I don't even want to think about that.

Molly delivered them all by herself.  Carolyn, the foster, stayed with her, just in case, and assisted the kittens to find the nipples, but Molly delivered them,  cleaned them off, licked them until they took their first breath, ate the cord and placenta, and nudged them to her nipples. Carolyn went to bed after 5 had been delivered within 1 hour, figuring it was all over. The next morning she found four more in their little groups.

Molly is smart.  She separated them into three groups of  two-three- and four.  She only has 4 working nipples right now so she is making sure nobody is denied a meal. Carolyn put them all together but Molly regrouped them.  Molly is now hiding them under the bed, telling us to 'get lost and not interfere with her feeding plan'.   The kittens are not crying and Molly even ventured out into the dining room when the foster was eating chicken and looked at her as if to say "where's mine?".

I set up an account at Critter Jungle, so the Carolyn can pick up more KMR when she is running low.   We are supplementing Molly with KMR and kitten food, so she can recycle it to her kittens.  When they are 2 to 3 weeks old we can safely try to supplement the kittens directly on a rotating basis to keep some of the pressure off the mother.  We can't let her calcium drop or her heart will stop and we will then have a dead mother and nine kittens who most likely won't make it.  The next three weeks will be the most critical.  We will ween the kittens early, but they will still be fed by Molly too. Molly will ween them completely when she is ready,  but at least, if partially weened, Molly will not be depleted too much. The next three weeks are critical; if only we can get them through.

There are 3 tortoiseshells (so females), 2 white harlequins with brown spots, 2 orange, 2 beige.

So, that is the latest on Molly.   Hasn't she done amazing for a cat only a little over a year old herself.  I'll keep you posted as I hear updates during this crucial next three weeks. Keep her in your thoughts, please and if you care to donate please go to this link .http://www.catrescuenetwork.org/

On to cat-sitting...

This is my darling kitty-client, Twinkle. Although this is a photo I took of him years back he is still a lovely tabby cat. I'm looking forward to caring for him soon.

Around our home, the first decorations to go up at Christmas is our display of little trees.

I love the Christmas tree and have collected little trees for the past few years. It's a small collection but well-loved. The white box has three ceramic evergreens that belonged to my mom. They are a treasure to me.
Time to take them out of the boxes and dust them off. Annie was busy washing up after breakfast while I 'played' for awhile. There is nothing that Annie misses when it comes to Christmas. I'm sure she'll be in all my decorating photos. She loves it all.

On Friday I will provide you with a list of important things to ask your 'cat-sitter' before you leave on your holidays.

And now....our little mommy, Molly

Molly was rescued off the street, pregnant and hungry.
Molly is now the mommy of nine (yes, nine) kittens. She is not much more than a kitten herself and this road ahead for her will not be an easy one. I don't have too much info right now except to say that the rescue is very concerned and is hoping that all the kittens and Molly will do ok. I'll keep you posted as I learn more. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. This will be costly now for the rescue as Molly will need to be supplemented with KMR for added calcium immediately and the kittens will soon need it, too. KMR is a milk-replacement for kittens. If you would like to help, The Ottawa Cat Rescue Network  http://www.catrescuenetwork.org/  would appreciate any donation that you could make towards the care of Molly and her 9 babes. Thank you.

Trouble ahead.

I see trouble ahead when Annie walks in here.
The clouds are moving on but it's been raining all day and the cats are bored. Sierra is preparing for some action and ready to take her on. That is once she wakes up. I'd best take the dog out.

Hope your day is sunny.

Choices in pet-care while you travel & What's in the cookie jar?

The Christmas season is fast approaching and I am now starting to book cats in for cat-sitting over the holidays. I came across this fabulous article that I would like to share that looks at the different approaches to cat-care while you travel.

http://www.catbehaviorassociates.com/pet-sitter-or-boarding-kennel-which-one-is-right-for-your-cat/

I have been cat-sitting in our area for almost twenty years. Keeping your cat in their home with their familiar beds, windows and feeding schedules has worked the best, in my opinion,  for our local kitties. If you are leaving behind a single cat then I suggest two visits daily. A morning and evening visit keeps the lone cat from becoming lonely and gives them someone to look forward to seeing to break up the day. If there are multi-cats in the home then one visit a day may be sufficient but to keep the feeding schedule on track you may still want two visits. Changing lights, opening and closing curtains and bringing in the mail daily is a smart way to keep your home safe and sound, too.

Booking early for cat-care in your home will give you peace of mind and be one more thing off your long 'to do' list. =^..^=
I'm looking so forward to the Christmas season.

'Tis the season to be jolly ...and covered in cat-hair.'

And for tea-time...
What's in the cookie jar today?
for my new followers I thought I would post this recipe once again.
Applesauce Oatmeal Walnut Cookies
( a favorite of ours)

1 3/4 cups All purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. powdered cloves
1 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup seedless raisins (optional)
1/2 cup walnut pieces
1 cup rolled oats

Measure together first 5 ingredients. Mix together in another bowl the butter, sugar & egg. Cream together.
In another bowl, combine applesauce and soda. Blend into creamed mixture alternating with dry mixture. Fold in raisins (optional)  walnuts and oats.
Spoon onto greased cookie sheet or use parchment paper. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees. They should be golden brown.
Everything looks pretty on blue and white china.

I learned something new today. I was short 1/2 a cup of all-purpose flour for my cookies and all I had in the house was pancake flour so that's what I used. Guess what? They are delicious and moist and none the wiser. There's a cookie-tip for the day.

"Audrey, are you up?"
"Oh, Lord have mercy, now what does she want?"

For those who asked, my header was designed by the talented Deidre Wicks. Please take a moment and visit her website and enjoy her gallery of water-colours. http://www.whenwatermeetspaint.com/

A Fall project

Finally finished up the chairs today.
All you need is material, foam to plump up the seat, scissors, a staple-gun, lots of staples and in our case a steam iron to iron out the wrinkles in the burlap before cutting.
These are the before photos.
The chair covers were old and didn't match. I don't care that the chairs don't all match but the covers had to go. I wanted them all the same.

I'm pleased at how they turned out and I love that the natural colour of the burlap will go with many wall colours.  It was quite easy with little fuss to cover the seats.
Just a little trimming up and we're done.

I had lots of help recovering the chairs and now someone is refusing to give up the french bread basket.

Now that the wood stove will be on most days I'll be putting it there with the beloved boxes. She'll be happy. Well, happier than she looks here, anyway.
Orange Mandarin tea with honey as a reward.
OK...a few cookies, too. *grin*
Next it's to make a table-runner from the left-over material and shop for a new over-head lamp.
Hope your day was fun.
