Good thoughts are needed
The days are a bit calmer now after such a busy Christmas and my plan was to relax between houses and rest. Now, however, I have a concern about our cat, Lily. She was off her food for 24 hours, looking very lethargic but drinking water. After an unsuccessful go at getting her to eat this morning, I quickly wrapped her up and took her in to the vet clinic as it was open for only 3 hours. After a short discussion, it was decided to give her a Vitamin B shot and get her started on warm beef baby food to stimulate her appetite. We brought her home and within an hour she was eating a bit, washing up and starting to perk up nicely. Thank goodness. Lily has a heart condition and can go flat very quickly. Now we are to keep close watch over her and feed her every few hours a tablespoon of baby food and a special food the vet gave us called AD Critical care. This food is loaded with liver; pork liver, chicken liver. It is high in Vitamin B. I just hope I can get it into her.
Ed knows that Lily is not at her best right now. Before I scooped her up and went off to the vet I noticed he was staying close and draped his tail over her back. Animals sense when another is ill. This is quite frightening for them and Ed turning his face away from her is very natural. They have a very close relationship and if cats feel and give 'love', they really do depend on and love each other. We love her, too.

Poor darling...of course I will say a prayer for Lily....it is the hardest of times when kitties age...people too! It just stinks sometimes....

ReplyDeleteHealing thoughts and purrs on their way from this side of the Atlantic... do hope she's ok. Don't know if it's any use but one thing that encouraged Posky to eat was mixing some spring water (from a tin of tuna canned in spring water) onto his vet food. The smell got him eating.

I feel for you Deb having had Rupert at the vets on Christmas day with the same thing, he wasn't eating or drinking.
ReplyDeleteA few shots of something or other and a bit of rehydrating fluid and he pulled round quite quickly, who knows what it was.
I really hope that Lily makes a quick recovery too.

We are hoping the B12 will keep her going for awhile. She is frail but eating a bit and I am syringing food into her every 2 hours. She is drinking water, also. I tried tuna water on her but she turned her head away.

ReplyDeleteHydration us critical now as well as food. Like one of your previous posters, we give tuna spring water and kitties always seem to enjoy that. Also we've purchased various brands of natural spring water. I swear to you, they have preferences. Also, if you are feeding baby food, Gerber chicken has a higher caloric payload than either beer or turkey for the same size jar (100 for the chicken vs. 70 for the beef/ turkey). We know you are taking the best care of Lily. We just feel so helpless. Again, all of our love.
Thanks for the info Kari. I am syringing the Critical Care food into her every 2 hours and making sure she is still drinking water. She is still frail and we have the vet on call although the clinic is closed. I will be sure to get spring water into her. I am also giving her the Gerber chicken baby food.

Two of our dear cats are 14 years old--half-sisters. We hover over them with special tidbits and cherish the time we have left to love them. I tell myself that we need to brace ourselves to be 'letting go'--but as long as they are enjoying life it is difficult to think ahead to the time when they will leave us.
ReplyDeleteI have always found that having one of the cat family ill or with the death of one, the other cats in the household are very affected.
