Let's talk CAT (this is a repost from July 2012)

I love talking to Annie. She has the most expressive face and listens so intently. I think she knows every word I say to her.

Cats need to see your eyes when you talk to them and will often blink in response to your voice.
Try it. Look at your cat and obtain eye contact. Speak to your cat in a calm, quiet voice. Blink your eyes a few times. This is a very non-threatening gesture.

Your cat will often blink in response. Your cat is talking to you and has just spoken a thousand words.
Here Annie is saying "Gawd woman, go do something with your hair."

Your cat also talks to you through it's tail position.

When moving the tail side to side your cat is showing that it is very relaxed.
A quick shiver of the tip of the tail is telling you your cat is irritated.
A flipping motion says "I'm ready to attack"
A happy and content cat will hold it's tail high. This is the healthiest position.

hugs, Deb

  1. I usually get 'stop wittering, woman..I'm trying to sleep'...."you're not going out looking like THAT are you?"...'Dumb human'..."You are standing in my sunshine".....but the best is 'I love you too'.

  2. There's been a lot of talking around here since the princess came to call this home! Tails have been in all sorts of positions. They all enjoy being talked to ... that is for sure. It's too quiet ... I better go see if everyone is napping!!!!! Annie is so lovely.

  3. I get the 'feed me wet food' look!! I also get the tail 'flick' when he isn't happy with something. Love how they can look into your eyes and you know you are loved! That Annie has such a beautiful face. Hugs, Linda

  6. My very own Cat Whisperer--thank you for those tips. Bailey is a ragdoll and since he has Siamese in him (part of the breed) he also talks to me vocally. He distinctly says, "Ma," "No," and "Down"...those last two are usually directed towards my hubby! He also likes to rub his face against mine when I'm holding him--I feel he's marked me as HIS! I'm going to try the blinking and see how he responds, XOXO

  10. I love it when my cats blink at me and walk toward me with their tails up high! Cats are very expressive if you learn to read the sign language.

One of my cats will not only blink but will meow after me . She'll make a very special sounding soft meow and I'll attempt to make a the sames sound back! It's hilarious and I love it beyond words.
Those pansies are adorable it the little white pitcher. Just perfect.

  13. What a wonderful post, Deb! I do love talking to my cats and each of them speak to me in their own ways...Pituso always starts the conversation meowing aloud, just like her mother did. Ema, his sister, whose meow is almost imperceptible, stands by your side looking at you with her eyes wide open and then she blinks and purrs. Yuyú like Annie stares at you paying attention to the sound of your voice and blinking her eyes, Felipe and Marta who are siblings rub their heads against your legs and roll on the floor in response and Feli always "ask upa"to be cuddled up. Fede meows softly and blinks his eyes when I talk to him. Peque rubs his body against the legs of the chairs or the wall but doesn´t like upa at all and Biski who is a sweety purrs, rolls on the floors, and meows sofly not only when you talk to her but when you are near...Love is in the air when we are together!
