D is for donuts and dementia

"Dagnabbit" I know I'm supposed to lose weight before my next annual physical but we just had to stop in at the BEST BAKERY EVER on our way home from our property yesterday. The Richmond Bakery is, and has always been known by all in the area,  as #1, First Class, The Best Ever bakeshop. We do not love Tim Horton's doughnuts like a good Canadian should so it was a no-brainer to want some of their amazing honey-dip, raspberry-filled and chocolate-covered ones.
Brought home some healthy bread to make up for it. So if you live close-by, do yourself a favour and stop in to the Richmond Bakery on Perth St. in Richmond, Ont. They make cookies like your grandma did. Un-Be-Lieveable!!
"Now my runners are at the door and waiting for me to take them on a 1 hour walk (along with my dog who now has a clean coat after I slowly and carefully removed a gazillion burrs and never even lost an ounce doing so) so I never say "never".  I have lost a few but I will lose 10 lbs Dr. Den before you see me next time." He's such a stickler.

Today is the first day of Spring here. I AM PUMPED!!

Now let's get serious and talk about CATS.
Have you heard of 'Lost in the Night' howling? Ginny does this and has for about a year now.
This can be due to increased deafness or senility (my monies on this one) in your cat. There is no medication for this as it is a natural occurence with senior cats. We know that Ginny's hearing is good but she has shown signs of dementia for awhile now. During the day she seems good although I have caught her staring at the wall but at night she can break out in this blood-curdling yowl that can straighten the hair on your head and yank you from a splendid dream. She will walk the hall and stop in to the bedroom just to be sure she scared the life out of you and then leave again. I stumble down the hall and come up behind her to pick her up, scare the hell out of her and get a look of "who are you and what are you doing to me?" She will then settle down with me or just go back to bed in her office. Yes, the office is hers. That's where she lives and all her stuff is there. She moved in one day and that was that. So, it is nothing to be too concerned about as long as it doesn't happen every night and you end up sick from lack of sleep. If that happens you may have to shut the bedroom door, insert the ear-plugs and let her yowl.

hugs, Deb

Julie says..Hugs to Ginny from us. Didn't know much about dementia, but it could explain a lot since I've mostly had older cats in recent years.
    Have a good Sunday!

  6. The howling in the night that disturbs us is the loud ear piercing scream that is going on some nights just now right outside the bedroom window. Sounds like baby's screaming and we know it is cats that are allowed to roam at night and that upsets us so much. I wish people would be more responsible. Love the sound of that bread and cookies and it was a reward for after your trip so no worries. Have a great Sunday.. GJ x

  8. Our vet told us to leave small lights on throughout the house, which we did. Helped a bit in the beginning but the cat's crying out started again. Believe it or not, we learned to tune it out but it took us a while. The cat in question was a very "with it" kitty but he was older.

  9. Poor little Ginny! We've always had cats that howl in the night at any age, but I think they're just playing with toys, or sometimes they just miss us.

And those doughnuts look SO good, I think I gained 10 lbs. just looking at them!
