Well, hello there.

This morning's garden visitor.

With coffee in hand, I walked to the garden this morning to check out how the tomatoes were coming along. A noise from above my head and near the entrance to the wood-lot got my attention.
This guy fell out of a sumac tree with a thud and landed only a few feet from me. :-[
We both stood very still, only my heart pounding and his head rotating to get his where-abouts.

He was about  two and a half feet tall and very beautiful.
He stared at me, stayed long enough for a photo and then off through the wood-lot he went.
I think it was a Green Heron; perhaps a juvenile. What was he doing up in a sumac tree?
Does anyone recognize this bird?

  1. Yes! It's a green heron..These birds nest in trees, usually near water. Unlike most herons, the Green Heron does not typically nest in large colonies. The male starts the nest, bringing long, thin sticks to the female who finishes building the nest...
And, they live around wooded ponds, marshes, rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries...
And..Yes! That is a juvenile...Don't encourage it.. They eat small fish such as minnows, sunfishes, gizzard shad; also crayfish and other crustaceans, aquatic insects, frogs, tadpoles. Other items include grasshoppers, snakes, earthworms, snails, small rodents...
    NOTE..the word rodent..By the way..how is Simon..? :o).

  2. I think you've nailed it; a juvenile green heron, and they nest in trees.

  4. Did he fly away or run? I hope he wasn't hurt.

  5. My guess would be green heron. Wow -- what a shock! It's a great shot. I'm thinking maybe he was a young one and just took a tumble. But what an experience!
