Heat stroke in cats

Even 38C & high humidity didn't stop me from my walk today. I get antsy and I need to clear my head and a long walk will do that.  I miss my walking buddy as she travels but am determined to keep doing the 5km walk 3x a week.
I felt sorry for these guys...it's too darn hot.

Flowers adorn the bridge in the center of our town.

Now these kids had the right idea.
Tucked away in a shady spot on his porch was this old cat.
I see him every day on my walk.

Then it was off to cat sit ...

Ebony is very shy until I sit on the floor.
Then the purrs, rubs and snuggles are plentiful. Up one side, down the other. She yanks on my hair and stands on her back legs to reach my face. Snuggle, snuggle, rub a dubdub. I leave her home looking like an old bag lady, clothes wrinkled and covered in cat hair.
She is 13 years old and shameless as can be. I'm smitten.

Lucky has it figured out.
She is smart enough to stay back and wait to see what tactics I use to entice her closer.

We are bonding. OK...the treats worked and now we are friends. No need for treats anymore (well, maybe once in awhile).

I finished up my visits with the boys, Bud & Chase this morning. They live in a lovely, cool log cabin with large windows for their pleasure.

The birds & squirrels were fed so they will be entertained now while they wait for their person to return. The second he returns they are out the door. I love these two brothers.

Cat-tip-for-the-day=^..^=avoiding heat-stroke in cats

In this heat I worry about out-door cats. They can suffer heat-stroke just like a human can. Here are a few things to watch for if your cat spends time outside in this blistering heat.

1.Panting
2.Anxiety (pacing)
3.Increased heartbeat
4.Respiratory distress
5.Dark red gums
6.Lethargy
7.Increase body temperature. (Over 102.5 deg)

To avoid this, please keep your cat inside in this hot, humid weather. If that is impossible, leave lots of cold water outside for your cat and I don't mean one bowl. Leave many bowls of cold water here and there in shady spots so there is no chance they run out. Provide a shady spot for them to sleep. Check on them periodically to be sure they are not showing any of the above signs.

St. Francis & not so saintly Audrey

Happy 1st day of Summer. It feels like we have had summer for a month already. Today it was too hot to even go for my regular walks. Poor me, poor Kane.
But look what the sun has done for my tomato plants. Won't be long before I devour them.

(all that and a bag of cat treats...that's Audrey)
There is no end to her 'badness' but she is keeping all the moths at bay and any insect that finds it's way into the house. Unfortunately, she will take down a lamp, a plant, a screen and practically impale herself on many objects just to get to it. She doesn't seem to understand that if she flies into a door... it will hurt. I'm beginning to feel she is a bit of a dolt.

(Fascinated with ice cubes)

She has charmed her way with the oldsters. Sierra was always especially interesting to Audrey and with feline perseverence she has managed to win her over.
Notice she is in a little box inside of a bigger box. Oh, I tell ya, it is nutty around here.

We all love this little maniac.

This is one of my requested birthday gifts. It must be the Catholic in me.

This will be taken out to our property soon to live amongst my never-forgotten and loved kitties. If you have followed this blog,  you know we have property and look forward to building soon. We have owned this land for many years and most of our deceased pets have been laid to rest there. I always wanted them to remain close to me and I'm sure that doesn't surprise any of you.
Our property is a little piece of country off a country road.

Kanie loves it here.

I  came across this article on line and thought "Really...you sure don't look that age." What do you think? Ed looks older at 24 years.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1344271/Can-Lucy-39-really-oldest-cat-world.html Amazing...if it's true. I laughed when it was the old aunt that 'remembers' this cat as a kitten. Not sure how reliable that would be.

I'll leave you with this...

Kitty treats

I've been 'taking care of business' again. It's time I show off some of the cats I am cat-sitting recently.

Bud & Chase found a bug...
They believe in sharing their treats. Now feathers, that's different.
                                                 Chase
This is elegant Ebony
she loves tummy rubs
This is her bed
and her special toys.
Lucky
started life as a feral. She is timid with me but finally coming around. I'm still working with Addy, her sibling.
We'll get there...baby steps.

Cat-tip-for-the-day=^..^=healthy treats
I carry treats for my client's cats and also there are treats left at the home for me to give to the cats when I  leave. I am telling my clients about Pure Bites freeze dried chicken pieces and how they are much better for the cat than the popular Temptations treats. This treat is 100% pure chicken and has added nutrients.
Treat of choice recommended highly.

Holy Crap!

Rideau Ferry Antiques
Organized Chaos

Let's go junkin'...
(me and sister-in-law, Donna)
can you believe this place?
Inside this house you'll find thousands of dishes & lots of other treasures (if you can get to them).
It kind of makes you dizzy.

There were 3 buildings loaded from floor to ceiling.

We got out alive.
These 3 orphaned tea-cups came home with me.
No saucers but that's ok. We like to mix it up around here. Aren't they so sweet?
Little pieces of art.
 I will use all three.

I was so spoiled this birthday and received more gorgeous china from my sister-in-law, Donna, husband Rick and the retired-guy.
I'll save that for another day.

Today, Sierra & Lily are enjoying the screened-in deck. It is very hot and muggy.

The winner of the Glengarry tea-cup give-away is Snap from http://twistylane.blogspot.ca/. Please drop over and see her fabulous blog.

I'm joining up with Tea time Tuesday at http://sandimyyellowdoor.blogspot.ca/, Tea cup Tuesday at http://artfulaffirmations.blogspot.ca/ and Table-top Tuesday at http://www.astrollthrulife.net/

Off to cat-sit.

A full weekend & thank you

It's been a busy weekend. We had company (wait 'til I show you where we went 'junkin'), I had cat-sitting to do (so many gorgeous felines) and then we celebrated Father's Day and my 60th Birthday on Sunday. Whew...that was not easy to type.
How did this happen so fast?

With my sister, Diane and her grand-daughter Taylor.

"Thanks everyone, I had a blast!"

Photo taken after birthday dinner along the Mississippi River

I love this photo taken some time ago when we rescued this little kitten off a busy street. We did find a good home for him and Gary took a shine to him before he left. He went to a wonderful home and was named Shamus.

"Happy Father's Day, Gary & all our family 'dads'.

The kids and I wish you a very Happy Father's Day.

Thanks everyone for so many nice birthday greetings. Made the leap a little easier.

And the winner for the Glengarry Tea-cup is  Snap at http://twistylane.blogspot.ca/
I hope you enjoy your new tea-cup. Please send me your mailing address and I will ship it out asap.

Tomorrow I'll take you junkin'.

Mix & Match china

Stay Calm & Put the Kettle on.

I love yellow & white tea-cups.

Mixing and matching cups and saucers makes a pretty display.
I found myself 'homing' a new one today. I was shopping for a jacket and somehow...some way...this came home with me, too.

This is Bone China, Hammersley & Co. Made in England.

I was tidying up and dusting since company is coming for the weekend.

It's hard not to start playing a bit.

Do you pick a colour scheme and then  mix up the patterns?
For company I will use my white dishes but I love drinking tea or coffee out of these lovelies.

I came across Calaus on my walk today.  He was very busy chasing shadows and gave me only a moment of his time.

Somehow, I think that is about all anyone gets from this guy.

Remember to leave a comment if you are interested in my give-away.
The little tea-cup is called Glengarry Thistle and it is made in England. It is in perfect condition.
Draw is Monday.
Good luck!

 hugs, Deb
