Audrey

I seem to only have time lately to post once a week.   I have had a very roller-coaster few days again with health issues this time regarding Audrey. She has been back and forth to the clinic because of 'episodes' I call them, but 'seizures' were something to consider.
This began Wednesday...short 30 second episodes of her stiffening and frothing at the mouth; eyes were dilated and she was dis-oriented. When it was over she acted like nothing had happened. ??? It was very frightening to witness.
Audrey spent the whole day at the clinic yesterday. Her vet has put her through many tests and now she is on Gabapentin, which controls seizures, for a short time and antibiotics for fluid that they found again in her ear canal. Ear drops for the inflammation and pain meds for her over-all discomfort. This cat will hate me by the time we get to the end of this.
                                        (a bag full of meds)
The polyp scare we had before may have in the end been an actual problem. They see something in the canal again; in there very deep.
Apparently, URI (which lays dormant until the animal becomes stressed) can form masses known as polyps in the ear canal. The polyp can in turn cause pain which can bring on these seizure-like episodes.
After two days of meds the symptoms have stopped and she is getting back to her old self but this is far from over.

When I adopted Annie and her babies years back they all had the Upper Respiratory Virus in them. I can see now how this can plague them throughout their life and cause other more serious issues.
Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. This has been one he** of a year for my girls. :(

What would they do without their beloved sun-puddles.

  15. I do hope the medications work and Audrey feels better. That horrible upper respiratory infection runs rampant in our area (northeast US). Unfortunately there's no way to know what effects it will have on our kitties later in life. 'Prenatal care' seems to be just as important for kitties as it is for humans nowdays, and feral cats don't have that option.

You and Audrey will be in my thoughts. Please keep us posted as to how she's doing.

I know she is being well looked after. She is blessed, at least, in that respect.

PS-ear scritches to you, too, sweet Annie ♥

  19. I had a cat that had seizures but she was allergic to the flea drops that you put on the neck. The seizures were so frightening for all of us; one evening she started and we had to go miles to find a vet, by the time we got there the seizures had stopped. Poor Audrey, hope she improves quickly and the thing is she will blame you, they all do that !! We stopped using the drops of course and now they have a six monthly injection, they hate that and of course it is all my fault. Love Andie xxx

  20. Thinking of you and sending prayers for Audrey's health. It is so awful when our furr-babies are sick.

  21. Sending loads of get well wishes to "our girl" Audrey. You must be very concerned -- I know I would be. Sounds as though you have a good vet and they are doing all the right things. So hard to see them hurt. Sure do hope these medicines do the trick. Is the polyp in a spot where it can be removed? Oh, do hang in there. What a year you've had with the girls...

  22. Praying for Audrey (and you). A year ago today we lost Earl Grey to FIP. Now we have 4 mo.old Grady. Earl had ear issues all his life, too, but I don't think that had anything to do with his illness. God be with you.

  23. Poor Audrey! How scary to see the 'episodes'. I know Charlie had one near the end of his life and I freaked out. Wishing Audrey and you some rest and hopefully a resolution to this. Hugs!

  26. So sorry to hear that Audrey is not feeling well. But I'll bet she is glad to be home again. Going to the Vet's for any reason is stressful on them. Let's hope she's on the mend.

  27. Audrey is a dear little kitty. I hope she's feeling better in a hurry. I recently had a scarey event with my rough collie. You are the very best kitty parent ever, try not to worry too much.

  28. Oh no, poor Audrey! My little Monkey has seizures, it's absolutely terrifying to watch her go through them. They aren't often enough to warrant medication, thank God.

  29. Audrey, sweetheart! We are distressed to hear that you aren't feeling well, but we also know that you are a heck of a fighter and won't let anything keep you down! And Deb: we get it. We know what you are feeling; we are your support group for mom's with sick cats! Hugs and purrs.

  31. Oh Deb....this was a stressful bit of news. Poor darling Audrey...as you know Mae's story of how her seizures began back in November of last year. It was a horrible time. She is still on one 25 mg. capsule of Zonisamide daily with no seizures since December 2016. I wish there was more information available for cats and their illnesses. I hope and pray Audrey will be well.

  32. Oh no. Cammie is in the hospital as I write, so I can well understand your anxiety. There is little worse than not knowing what conditions may bring. The best of luck to Audrey and ay she have many sun-puddles to enjoy.

  43. Our prayers are with Audrey. The cause of seizures in cats can be very difficult to accurately diagnose. Fingers and paws crossed. We know you are swamped right now but any one line update would be greatly appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Deb, First of all, I agree with what Kari (above) said about one line updates! I will never meet dear Audrey but she and Annie have become so real to me. And hearing that either one of them is not well is really hard to hear. And, I too, know how you feel. Just plain scared and panicky even. Will be praying that God will be with and bless you and Audrey. Doesn't it seem that these things seem to "pile up" on us at the worst times too! With loving thoughts and prayers from Nebraska ><>

  45. Deb, I am so sorry to hear this news of Audrey. It breaks my heart.

You said that she is on Gabapentin for a short time. If it turns out to be very long at all you might want to taper her off of it over several weeks. I know of people who have had very difficult withdrawal symptoms when they were stopping it. I don't mean to upset you but love Audrey and you too much to not mention this. You can read about Gabapentin withdrawal online if you would want to. I would avoid giving a Benzodiazepine medication for the seizures as they are extremely additive and very painful to W/D from.
I am praying for her and all of your family. I know how scary seizures are in our animals. We had a dog who lived over 12 years with seizures. He was able to do very well so it can be done in some cases, Deb. It can!

    Blessings and hugs to you.
    Lily

  46. I'm sorry to hear about Audrey; when Clara had a "stress" induced urinary infection, it made me so sad she had to go through this. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
