And the rain came.

Simon was out and about again yesterday. It was nice to leave him some breakfast on the rock just outside of his den opening. I chatted with him while he sat on the rock munching some apple and nuts.
Another winter survival.

The ground has thawed, just in the last three days, enough to put up my bluebird house.
The entrance hole is 5 ft. from the ground
so it will be easy to see if it is being occupied.

The Eastern Bluebird would be a beautiful addition to our little property.

Now Vacant
Free Rent
in this quaint, wooded area.
Only seconds from a variety of fly-through restaurants
and an abundance of tasty insects.

We still have lots of snow to be rid of.
the rain came in buckets. It will rain all day today, too.
That will take care of most of it and wake up
our spring flowers.

I have been baking today
for an annual fundraiser bake-sale for
 Country Cat Rescue.
The rescue is run by a friend of 25 years.
It is this rescue that is now caring for Sylvester that I posted about in a previous post.
Along with many, many others.
I hope it's a huge success.

Applesauce Oatmeal Cookies
1 3/4 cups All purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. powdered cloves
1 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup seedless raisins (optional)
1/2 cup walnut pieces
1 cup rolled oats

Measure together first 5 ingredients. Mix together in another bowl the butter, sugar & egg. Cream together.
In another bowl, combine applesauce and soda. Blend into creamed mixture alternating with dry mixture. Fold in raisins (optional)  walnuts and oats.
Spoon onto greased cookie sheet or use parchment paper. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees. They should be golden brown.

Cinnamon Loaf cakes
& muffins
Chocolate chip & Applesauce Oatmeal cookies.

Sure smells good at the mouse-house.

hugs, Deb

  1. They look delicious! Thank you for the recipe! Stay warm and dry :)

  2. We just had our bake-sale at the PAW Society. New owners are refusing charities multi-table events at our previous venue - a mall, with plenty of traffic - so we're still struggling to find a decent location. The best of luck to Country Cats, though. One cat rescued is a rescue for all of us.

  3. Yes, the rain is doing quite a number to what's left of the snow!

  4. I have an Eastern Bluebird house, but they haven't visited me in OK unfortunately. They came every year to nest in TX. I so enjoyed them.

  5. Wish we lived closer so I could buy that cinnamon loaf!!!

My hubby made the very same bluebird house (actually, more than one) that the Retired Guy is planting.

    Nebraska ><>

  6. I hope you find some beautiful tenants for your new apt., Deb. So nice of you to bake for the fundraiser - such a worthy cause. The cookies look wonderful! I made your banana muffins and they are so delicious! The hubs is eating one right now :) xx K

  7. I had Blue Bird houses when we lived in Connecticut, but have yet to put some up here. You've inspired me to get on that! Love the cookies; they look so comforting on a rainy day with a cup of tea, XOXO

  8. Deb ~
Wish I lived nearby to your Fund Raiser!
How wonderful of you to participate, help, bake.
Those apple sauce cookies sound yummy . . .
(Does "yummy" have a sound?? I think I should have said, I bet those apple sauce cookies will TASTE yummy!). Oh well . . .
Thank you for visiting me at the Irish Garden House.
The pictures of you with furry cuddles let's me know how much you love and care for animals. I hope the Bluebirds arrive and Nest for you to watch/see.
Love the bunny bowl and all the side bar pics and info.
    Love ~

  9. Good luck with your sale. Hope you raise a bunch of money for those needy kitties.
Glad Simon made it thru the winter.

  10. I wish I lived nearby to your fund raiser too! I'm a horrible cook and don't do it often. But I'm mad for homemade baked goods. I'd buy up anything freezable in a flash!
Can I tell you how it just made my day to know that Simon is awake and eating!!!! Wonderful!

  11. Keep baking all those goodies I will come and move into the blue bird house lol !YUMMY ! I hope you have a bluebird family move in soon . I am in the midst of tidying up Papas wood shop with him and we will be getting going on a few blue bird houses of our own as well as other wood working projects , see his shop doesn't have heat yet so we will do our projects in the warmer weather . . Hope your fundraiser goes well ! We had a dusting of snow this morning here but all melted by noon and it has been sunny all this afternoon , temps are to get warmer and lots of sunshine for us down here to . Thanks for sharing , have a good weekend !

  12. We have a few Bluebirds nesting right now, they remind me of English Robins, although blue, not red :)
    Your nesting box looks perfect.
I believe I can smell those wonderful baked goods all the way down here in Tennessee, I would be first in line I'm sure !
Little Simon is such a sweet boy, I'm sure he thinks he is royalty of some sorts, the way you feed and take care of his needs......after her royal highness Audrey of course :)

  13. Oh, no cookies for me for a few weeks -- and these look so good! today was sunny here -- hopefully there, too!
