Dear Ed

To my dearest friend.
I stood by your bed last night; I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying you found it hard to sleep.
I spoke to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today; your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today; you tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you; I smiled and said, "it's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to me.

This moving poem appeared on-line today; a fitting day for me as today is one year since we lost our dear Ed.

He was a beautiful cat, strong, sleek and yet so gentle.

I found him at a shelter in his 20th year. He looked so thin, so lost, and I brought him home.
He thanked me everyday with his quiet companionship.
He fell in love in his old age with our pretty, little Lily. She loved him right back 'til the end.

                               God's Masterpiece

                               He lived 26 years.
                           Still, not long enough.

We all miss you, dear Ed.

When my first cat died, I swear every day I could still feel him brush up against my leg and wrap his tail around it while I stood in the kitchen. It was so real I would actually stop and look for him. I always said it was his was like that for about a year!

Sweet memories for your Ed. I love that he and Lily had a thing going. Aw.

  7. God's masterpiece ... absolutely. How lucky you were to have eachother even if it was for such a short time. It's never long enough, is it?

  20. Ah, Deb, I can empathize. We lost our beloved Scary Dec. 17th. He had gone in for a routine teeth clean and died right there. Unbelievable. I still miss him so. But, life does go on for the other 8 we have and we love them so very much!

  21. What a wonderful tribute to Ed. I'm so glad he found you and Lily during his twilight years!

  25. Aww, such a beautiful poem. I'm sure Ed has to be missed. I honestly have never heard of a cat living that long. He was a blessed furry one for sure.

  31. Oh how I miss that handsome face! xxoo

  32. I believe that our beloved fur children remain with us until we have passed across the divide and can join them. Your Ed and my Tiffany await beside us for the eventual reunion when the time comes. That's my definition of paradise....

  33. We miss you so much, Ed, and will never stop loving you. Our special candle was lit this morning in honor and celebration of your precious life. You were a Gift from God.
Until we meet a the bridge, dear friend.......all of our love, always.

  34. So beautiful... Makes me cry, we just lost our dear Betsy.... Still very young and in such a horrific way. She was such a great character and sooo cuddly!
I miss her terribly... Love from Mirjam.

  35. I can barely type this for tears!
I feel that many of my pets have 'never left me' too, sometimes out of the corner of my eye I 'see' them knowing my current cat Lucy is sat beside me.
I often feel a soft landing of something on my bed by my feet, just where nearly all my cats and dogs have slept, don't think it is a problem with circulation lol!
    Thanks for sharing. xxx

  36. Through you, we were so very blessed to fall in love with handsome and noble Ed. I think of him sometimes and the beautiful story of Ed and Lily. Yes, he was God's masterpiece. Oh how our pets steal our hearts. Of course, this poem brings tears...thank you for sharing Deb It reminds me so of the cats I have lost too. We hold them in our hearts forever! Hugs to you!

  37. I cry for the love you're missing. I cry for my own dearly departed furry friends.
Trying to savor the good memories
