abandoned

Our local shelter is bursting at the seams.

Up to 35 animals came in from one home this weekend.

4 dogs, cats, pregnant cats & mother cats with kittens.

They were all abandoned.

This is where we step up and thank our local shelter for just being there and opening their doors to these neglected, homeless animals.

But they can only do so much before the stress takes over.

We are scrambling to find foster homes for the moms and kittens.

Wish us luck. It is a tough time to be doing this.

And let me introduce you to one of the mother cats and her 3 kittens who are resting in our spare bedroom as I type this. I am now a foster home.

Her name is Mellie. During the seizure of over 35 animals, Mellie was giving birth. She was full of fleas and under-nourished. Two kittens were brought into the shelter with her and then the third was born. They are all doing fine. Mellie will take care of her babies and I will take care of her.

A new adventure has begun.

hugs, Deb

  1. Oh Deb, PLEASE be careful & keep her under quarantine. So often in situations like this I read where the foster's personal cats are then infected with something from the foster & then all are lost. You're so smart I know you most likely know this.

She's adorable and the poor thing having to deliver during such horrid circumstances. I hope they find the cretins responsible for collecting and then abandoning all the animals.

  3. Stacy - we have her in a room of her own with a good latch on the door. The others don't even know she is here. I'll be having her checked over again by our vet but she has already been seen by the shelter vet and has been given the ok for fostering. She is a good mother and a very sweet natured cat. She will do fine in a room of her own with some soft music and lots of comfy spots. :)

  4. I am so pleased to hear that you are doing this for Mellie and her babies. It sounds like they found a wonderful, soft spot to land while the kittens grow and they wait for forever homes.

  5. Poor little baby, but I am so glad to hear that she now has a safe haven.

One day, when we get a house, I would love to foster cats. There are so many neglected animals out there it's heartbreaking.

Have you named the kittens yet?

  10. Bless you. Keep us updated on Mellie and her babies. I just dosed our babies with Advantage. We have decided (or should I say, I HAVE decided) that we are going to keep the 3 babies until we can find them homes. I know our shelters cannot take in any more cats. Momma (the stray) is getting spayed in the next 2 weeks. I guess for now, it looks like I have 9 cats. I am just keeping me fingers crossed my cranky neighbor does not complain.

  11. Bless you for what you are doing. I wish people would stop abandoning their animals. It is such a cruel thing to do.

  12. Awww Deb, good on you for helping young Mellie and her babies. We know that by stepping up you are giving them a good chance of growing up big and strong and getting good furrever homes of their own.

  13. When I look at sweet Mellie I start to cry. Never to have known love and nurturing herself and yet to be a sweet mother to her kitties. How desperate she must be for a little love and affection for herself. I look into her eyes in her photo and just cry. Well, she couldn't be in a more wonderful place could she! If there is anyone who can pamper at kitty it's you. Her kitties will know love from the start but what a treat it will be for this deprived little girl. God bless you, Deb. You really are a wonderful person.
